Mulenga picked up the man of the match award for his display in the Soweto Derby on Saturday, as Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in their Absa Premiership clash at FNB Stadium.
The Zambian international has managed two goals and two assists in eight league starts this season, struggling to find his stride after scoring three goals in his first five league appearances last term.
But this does not concern the 28-year-old, who takes solace from the fact that he has managed to create goals for his teammates and says he will continue pushing to hit the desired form.
“The good thing for me is that, when I don’t score, I create, so that makes me continue working hard and pushing forward,” said Mulenga.
“Sometimes you can play maybe five games without scoring and still create [goals], and that gives me confidence too.
“I don’t have to drop my head [when I don’t score], I just have to forge ahead because we’ve got so many games ahead of us, and the goals will come.”
In the Soweto Derby over the weekend, Mulenga was a constant threat to an irregular Kaizer Chiefs defence, notably providing a neat lay-off for Vincent Pule’s goal.
On his performance, the burly striker said he is unafraid to go head-to-head with defences due to his ‘big player’ status at Pirates and Chipolopolo.
“For me, I’m not a small player for now; I’m a big player. I’m playing for the national team and I’ve got too much confidence when I have the ball,” he added.
“So, when any defender comes to me, I have to take him on because it’s my job. It’s up to me what I do with the ball, so the defender won’t [get it], so I have to take him on.”
