Soweto Derby review, missed chances galore!

Despite being impressed with the performance in the Soweto Derby, a former coach of both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs head coach has raised one concern.

The exciting Betway Premiership ended in a 2-1 win for the Buccaneers, who rallied from behind at the FNB Stadium.

The two giants of South African football will meet again at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday in the Nedbank Cup final.

Augusto Palacios believes Saturday's match was a game of two halves, while also noting that the players struggled with clinical finishing.

"The first half was all Chiefs, and the second half saw Pirates come out strong. It was a game marked by missed chances,” says the man fondly known as ‘Njenje’.

"There was great support from both sides, with a packed stadium. Pirates scored (two), and that's why they won. It was a good game with an unpredictable outcome, but in the end, there had to be one winner.

"The final of the Nedbank Cup will be very challenging because both clubs will aim to win with a strong approach and attitude. It's also difficult to predict who will come out on top.

"It’s unprecedented to have two derby matches within six days. It's great for football in South Africa, on the continent, and globally, especially with sold-out tickets. Congratulations to the supporters of both teams for the past weekend.

"The league game was played at a very good tempo, and the intensity was high. Neither team played for a draw.

"Chiefs scored an early goal, but Pirates didn't back down, demonstrating a strong mentality throughout the match.

"One of my concerns is the missed chance. That's something both teams need to address,” he adds.

Palacios believes the fact the upcoming clash will yet again have young players on show from both camps highlights the quality and future of Mzansi football.

"This upcoming match is particularly important as it is the last derby for the Pirates coach (Jose Riveiro) and a vital cup to win. The Pirates players understand the need to win this cup for their supporters, while the Chiefs coach (Nasreddine Nabi) is aware that this could be his first cup if circumstances align."
