Despair for ex-Chiefs keeper

Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has little to cheer about in the New Year with his bags packed for his departure from Marumo Gallants.

Akpeyi was adopted by Gallants at the beginning of the season after the club bought Moroka Swallows' status.

However, the 38-year-old has had no joy, playing only thrice, with all those appearances coming in the opening three league games of the campaign.

The veteran keeper came on as a substitute against Kaizer Chiefs after Washington Arubi was injured and then played from start to finish in the defeat to Golden Arrows.

Misfortune then struck when he was forced out injured against Mamelodi Sundowns after conceding thrice.

Since that match in September, Akpeyi has not played again and has only been on the bench once for the strugglers, who have conceded the most goals of all the teams in the league.

Word reaching this publication is that the former Super Eagles international is being released.

This could possibly mark the beginning of the end for Akpeyi, who has also played for Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs throughout his time in South Africa.

Gallants already have another foreign keeper training with the club.

Also on the way out is Namibian midfielder Rewaldo Prins – who will be moved out on loan to create further space at the club.

Gallants have already brought back Ivorian striker Sede Junior Dion and have another two foreign players – a striker and a defender – currently being assessed.
