Bafana had previously taken part in 12 AFCON qualifying campaigns – with the exception of the 1998 and 2013 tournaments when South Africa served as the host nation – with 44 players scoring for the national team across the respective qualification stages.
From that list, Sibusiso Zuma emerges as the nation's most prolific goalscorer in AFCON qualifying ahead of the likes of the late Philemon Masinga, Mzansi's all-time record goalscorer Benni McCarthy and Tokelo Rantie.

Zuma netted eight times in AFCON qualifiers, although that figure does include three goals during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which duly served as the qualification process for that year's African showpiece.
The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns forward is closely followed by Masinga, who netted seven times in total, including South Africa's first-ever goal in AFCON qualifiers, while McCarthy and Rantie share third place after scoring six times each.
Shaun Bartlett features in fifth spot with five goals, ahead of Delron Buckley and current Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau, while SuperSport United striker Thamsanqa Gabuza closes off the list with three goals to his name.
Tallies include goals scored during 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, which served as the qualification process for those years' respective AFCON tournaments, as well as from the annulled 1996 qualification matches.
