At the age of just 19, the budding midfielder had his career abruptly cut short after suffering permanent paralysis from the waist down in a car accident last year.

The Amajita star had played just one professional season since making his senior debut for Amakhosi in September 2017, and made a name for himself at the under-20 Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA U-20 World Cup earlier that year.

He was widely touted as a Bafana Bafana prospect, as well as a future Chiefs captain, before having all that wripped away from him in November last year.

Recovering back home in Pietermaritzburg, Meyiwa on Tuesday expressed his longing for the game and shared an encouraging Bible verse, suggesting a deep desire to return to the playing field someday.

"I miss being on the field doing what I love," tweeted the teenager.

"Psalm 5:3 In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly."
