Why Lee Baxter is important for Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana

Baxter, son of newly appointed Chiefs head coach Stuart, has been doubling up as both Chiefs and Bafana's goalkeeper coach recently.

The 45-year-old trainer has faced plenty of scrutiny over the apparent bias, with local options such as Mamelodi Sundowns' Wendell Robinson being overlooked.

However, Heredia says there is no need for people to be concerned as the Scottish-Swedish national is like having an extra coach on the bench, given his qualifications.

"Look, Lee is the son of Stuart Baxter, and I was working very closely with his father, but when we went to Cape Verde, I had two assignments with FIFA and I couldn't attend the Bafana game," Heredia tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"And then they started to use Andre Arendse to replace me, and Andre is a lovely guy – nobody can deny whether he is good or bad – but he hasn't got the qualifications or whatsoever.

"He's using the experience and the name, but in today's football around the world you need to have qualifications. Without qualifications, you cannot sit on the bench.

"Now Stuart, of course, he gave an opportunity to his son. His son has a UEFA B license in coaching. He's available to sit on the bench.

"He also has one goalkeeper coaching course with UEFA, the first stage. You know UEFA divided the goalkeeper coaching course into five stages.

"In South Africa, we divide the goalkeeper coaching course into three stages, because the majority of our coaches are not full-time employed.

"But Lee Baxter has the first stage of UEFA goalkeeping, and a UEFA B coaching license, so he's available to sit on the bench, and this is why Baxter is [so valuable]. When Molefi Ntseki took over [at Bafana], he carried on working with Lee because he is qualified."

The Amakhosi keeper coach played an instrumental role in the club's rise on the continent this season after shot-stoppers Daniel Akpeyi, Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma all pulled their weight in the road to this Saturday's CAF Champions League final.
