In this edition of Where Are They Now, KickOff catches up with former TS Galaxy FC defender Mfundo Phungwayo to find out what he is up to these days.
The 30-year-old Phungwayo won the 2019 Nedbank Cup final with TS Galaxy, beating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Who is Mfundo Phungwayo?
"I come from Mbalenhle in Secunda; that's where I was born. I came up through the development ranks of Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Stars of Africa Academy.
"From there, I was spotted by Polokwane City while I was with the Swallows reserve side. I played at least three years at Polokwane City in the PSL. That's where Tim Sukazi recruited me to TS Galaxy."
Your playing days?
"I'm actually at a crossroads. I didn't reach my full playing potential, but I haven't retired yet; I'm just waiting for any opportunity that may come my way."
Did you make money from soccer?
"Not that much. There were times when I would finish a whole season without a club to play for. After my time at Chippa, I couldn't find employment elsewhere."
Where are you living currently?
"I'm currently residing in Alberton; I have my own house and I'm married. I tied the knot while I was still playing."
What job are you doing to put bread on the table?
"Right now, I'm focusing on my other businesses to keep myself busy. I'm running programs where I teach football skills to young boys. I charge a fee for this service because I move around a lot."
If I could do it again:
"I wish I had understood football better back then. I wish I had the experience I have now, as I believe I could have had a longer career."
