In this edition of Where Are They Now, former Ajax Cape Town star Sifiso 'Jomo' Vilakazi remembers the day he missed out on the league title in their last game of the season.
A 2-1 loss to Golden Arrows in 2008 saw the Urban Warriors lose the title to SuperSport United, a result Vilakazi attributes largely to Vonk.
He says this is not to be confused with the 2010/11 season when Ajax also lost the league title on the last day against Maritzburg United, with a big Vonk error proving costly. Orlando Pirates eventually snatched it on goal difference, with both teams tied on 60 points.
Are you happy with your playing days?
"Football doesn't owe me anything. I enjoyed my career, even though missing the league title with Ajax will forever be a missing link in my football career.
"We could have been the first team to win the R10 million prize money. We had a good plan, but Hans let us down that year, in 2008.
"Though it was more political, I think we panicked, and Hans let us down. As players, we didn't even speak to each other after that game, we were all thinking about how Hans let us down.
"That was my saddest moment in football. Winning the Telkom Knockout Top Goal-scorer award was my biggest achievement though. That's my greatest achievement in football. That was in 2008."
Did you make money from football?
"Yes, I think I got a fair share of my piece of cake. You must be satisfied with what you have negotiated for, don't be jealous of how much other people are earning because every player is given a chance to negotiate for what he thinks he's worth."
Where are you living?
"I'm in Kempton Park. I'm not married yet. I'm staying with my children and their mother."
Jobs since playing the game?
"I've been a taxi owner ever since. I have never done any job. I have been in the taxi industry since I was still playing.
"It's a bit challenging compared to football. It's something I never thought I would do, but I had to bring food to the table to survive during life after football."
If you could do it again?
"I'd push to win the league title. The way we lost it, I feel we could have done better.
"In all the teams I played for, I think we had a chance of winning the league. I will not have to join a big team to win the league. As you can see nowadays, the league is winnable."
