Stuart Baxter explains decision to leave Kaizer Chiefs

At the press conference earlier today when his exit from Chiefs was officially announced, Baxter was determined to make sure that his departure was viewed in as positive a light as possible.

However, despite his best efforts to hide the technical reasons why he did not want to stay on as coach, it is clear that interference from management – especially with regards to the buying and selling of players – was one of them.

Baxter was widely believed to have been upset about Bobby Motaung's decision to sell Kingston Nkhatha to SuperSport United during the January transfer window, while left-back Levy Mokgothu was clearly a player the coach did not want having left him in the stands all season. Siphelele Mthembu was another player that was not a favourite.

"It's difficult when you come to a point where you're at a big club – the chairman [Kaizer Motaung] mentioned the word 'tensions' – and I know Sir Alex Ferguson says exactly the same, that tensions drive a football club and they force people to stretch themselves," Baxter said.

"But when you're at a big club there are certain things that happen that drive that football club and you've got to be sure you're ready to meet those challenges.

"The second you think, for whatever reasons, that you cannot do that then it's better to part company and that is where we've been, and we've spoken maturely about it and we've agreed that for everybody this is the best solution.

"There will be no finger-pointing from me, no acrimony at all, and I think you guys [the media] have all tried to get hold of me and tried to get some sort of angle and I don't think any of you have succeeded because I don't want to spoil what has been for me, and I hope for Kaizer Chiefs, a beautiful three-year journey.

"This is not a decision I'm taking because SAFA have been calling me or Juventus have been under the table saying 'look, come to us' it's got nothing to do with anything else."

Baxter admitted he is in no rush to find his next employer and will be taking some time out in Sweden deciding on his next move.

"I will look for other jobs obviously. I have visited Turkey, there is a club that has asked me to consider it. Am I going to Turkey? At the moment there is nothing there. If something happens today or tomorrow or in six months, that will have to develop on its own," he said.

The two-time Absa Premiership winner was keen to stress that he is leaving Chiefs in positive spirits, and has not ruled out a return to the club in future.

"The players have been absolutely magnificent this year. I've enjoyed every minute working with the players at this football club. The people at the football club are excellent people. When I look back at the supporters, fantastic supporters in South Africa, the quality of people that I've worked with, I will have no problem working in South Africa again in the future," he concluded.

"As the chairman said, we would like to part company as friends, and friends usually bump into each other in the future."
