Story Behind My Nickname: Phinda Mzala

The original 'Phinda Mzala' in South African football Noel Cousins explains how he got the nickname while still playing for Arcadia Sheperds back in the eighties.

Cousins won the BP Top 8 title in 1985, the 1987 Players' Player of the Year accolade as well as the Bob Save Super Bowl in 1989 and 1991.

"I'll be honest with you, I think that accolade must go to the supporters that came with the nickname. I only heard about it in the press. I was maybe in the professional set - up for a year when that name came up already. I must give the supporters the benefits of them coming up with the name.

"They were giving me that kind of name obviously because those two went hand in hand. It's very special to be known to the supporters by a nickname that's synonymous to the football I played and the times I scored when I was playing (Phinda means AGAIN and Mzala means Cousin). It was an appropriate nickname. It was already 1983 when supporters came up with the name. I was at Arcadia Shepherds. In '83 when I won Top goalscorer somebody picked on the name and decided it was appropriate name."

Cousins says he does not mind sharing his beloved nickname with Orlando Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi.

"I don't mind sharing that name hey, we brothers in football that's all I can say. They can share the name no problem.," he added.

"It obviously has a different meaning to Lucky as it does to me. But I don't mind, the nicknames can be shared because I think there's been quite a few nicknames that has been shared before. I think every team used to have a player called Ace. So if people like Ace Ntsoelengoe can share their nickname why can't I ?"
