In the latest edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with former Bloemfontein Celtic star Lebohang Kukame on the origin behind his popular nickname "Majaivane".
Who and where did you play?
"My name is Lebohang 'Majaivane' Kukame, Majaivane is the nickname given to me. I started playing professional football at Bloemfontein Celtic.
"From Celtic I went to Jomo Cosmos, from Cosmos to SuperSport United. From United I went back to Cosmos, then I was released to Manning Rangers. Then there was Santos, while at Santos, Celtic bought me again.
"I then went to Maritzburg United, that's where my career ended. I think I was 30, 31 when that happened. I was then involved in a car accident. The doctors told me I will not be able to play football again because I broke my leg."
Who gave it to you and why?
"I can't really remember who gave it to me, but I was very young then playing for Katlehong Liverpool. We were playing in the Chappies Little League tournament when I got the nickname.
"My first nickname was 'Killer' because I had this tendency of penetrating opponents, and the crowd would be like 'You are killing them man!' Only when I went to Katlehong Liverpool the nickname Majaivane came to life, people were saying I made the opposition players dance. When I joined a team called Consol people combined the two names and started calling me 'Killer Majaivane'
Did you like it?
"Yes, I did because there was a Grootman who was from my Kasi who used to be called Majaivane. A very good, deadly, and skilful player. I was very happy to inherit a name of someone I grew up looking up to. At some point me and him we did play together."
Anyone that didn't use it?
"Only those I grew up with. Some of them never played the game."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"I wouldn't change that nickname for any nickname. I'm still 'Killer-Majaivane' even now.
"That's why I turned from being a midfielder to a striker. It was all inspired by that name. It gave me that power, aggression, and excitement."
Who should we ask for their nickname story?
"I would love you to give Patrick Ningiza a call, this week on 27 April we will be honouring one of own here in Katlehong Patrick 'General' Ningiza with a benefit game."
