Steve 'Chippa' Lekoelea: How Swallows made me snub Kaizer Chiefs

The former free-kick specialist was still playing for famous Chappies Little League amateur club Two For Joy when Amakhosi came calling.

Still using his mother's surname,Motsiri, in 1994, the attacker signed with Swallows instead, but two seasons later he was snapped up by Chiefs rivals Orlando Pirates.

"Before I went to Swallows, Chiefs and Witbank Aces were also interested. And by that time I was still playing for Two For Joy...do you remember Two For Joy? At Two For Joy we used to wear Swallows Under-10 teams jerseys. That's what made me fall in love with Swallows.

"We used their jersey for our matches. James Ngidi he was our chairman. I don't know if he was an Official at Swallows or he had shares, I just don't know but everything Swallows used to wear we also wore it at Two For Joy. This made my love for Swallows grew even more stronger. Because Chiefs is a big team, I thought it would be wise for me to start small, in a small team. I was 16 years old at the time.

"Chiefs also wanted me for their first team. Trott Moloto was the national Under-17 team coach at the time. That's where Swallows spotted me playing provincial tournaments. Because Swallows is a small team, I wanted to gain experience first. It was a right decision though because I was young so I couldn't start at a big team.

"As a young kid you start at Creche before going to School. Swallows is my Creche, Pirates a School, then followed the University which is the national team. I played for all the divisions of South African national teams here in Mzansi, U17, U20, U23 and Bafana Bafana. But I really enjoyed my football at Swallows because I was given the privilege of not marking and defending that much."
