Stephen Keshi had PSL interest

Keshi, 54, passed away suddenly on Wednesday after a suspected heart-attack, just as plans were beginning to form for him to work in South Africa.

Sukazi had been helping the former Nigeria national team coach assess his opportunities in the PSL and is shocked by his passing.

“I had a long conversation with him just last Thursday, so to wake up to this news is terrible,” Sukazi told snl24.com/kickoff.

“We spoke about the rumours linking him to Orlando Pirates, but I can tell you now they were just that. Pirates never made any approach for Stephen, nor were there any informal discussions.

“It was something that was started by unscrupulous journalists in South Africa and then got worse when Nigerian journalists started writing that he had signed for Pirates.”

However, Sukazi says two opportunities had arisen in the PSL that Keshi was mulling over.

“The first was for a technical director role at a club, but both Stephen and I did not like that idea. He was a coach, he was best out on the field coaching players every day.

“The other opportunity was as a head coach at a club that I cannot name as they were very discrete in their dealings. It was something that was interesting; Stephen and we were looking forward to seeing how it would develop.

“We were so confident he would be working in South Africa soon and believed that his presence in the PSL would add to our local game.”

Keshi was a legend of the African game and just the second man to win the African Nations Cup as both a player and a coach.
