Shongwe remembers Kaizer Chiefs legend Howard Freese

Amakhosi retired the club's number 20 jersey in honour of the famous former left-back.

"It's not because of his playing ability the legendary status, it's more than that.

"It's Howard the individual who was playing professional football while studying, and now he has his PhD. It's out of respect for Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung.

"The fact that he has kept all the cup finals jerseys, you know that's a character.

"I spoke to him this morning as I was sending him a message congratulating him, and then he called me back. I'm like 'I feel so bad that I don't have even one jersey except for those that were given to me by other keepers. But my personal jerseys I don't even have one.

"So it's honourable what he has done. You know he's a businessman now, they own some Spar or some Pick n Pay, they got two in Eldorado, they got one in Ennerdale and they got another one in Braamfischerville.

"I think Kaizer made his decision based on that. I mean to compare him with the other legends he is not in the picture at all, but there's a character that must be appreciated.

"Kaizer is making an example that you know what, besides playing football you've got to have a character, you must be able to reinvent yourself like Howard."
