Sekgota: Overhyped or underwhelmed?

The pace with which Kgaogelo Sekgota plays his football has always been an attractive strength about his game, which aided his move to Europe, before he played in the DStv Premiership.

Sekgota found his way to Lithuania and then Portugal before he set foot in domestic football's professional ranks.

It started all positive and promising at Lithuania club Stumbras with Sekgota playing a dozen games in a row, plus a goal and an assist through the second round of the 2017 calendar year.

In the next season, he shot up to more minutes with 19 appearances and five goal contributions.

The top leagues of Germany, France, Spain, England and Italy were the ultimate dream for the quick winger who still needed some working on.

Unfortunately, issues befell Stumbras, but he had done enough to earn a move to Vitoria Setubal in the Portuguese top league.

A debut against FC Porto gave reason for hope, but from then onwards struggled so bad he even had to play in the U23 league before deciding on returning home on loan to Bidvest Wits.

After arriving at the beginning of 2020, Sekgota was handed reasonable minutes through the second half of the season that was disturbed by issues related to the Coronavirus.

Sekgota had 635 minutes from 15 appearances with Wits when the 2019/20 season finally came to an end.

No goal delivered and just a single assist.

The next stop was Moroka Swallows with game time in abundance on the wing.

Three goals and two assists in 26 appearances rose to become Sekgota's best numbers of his career after that 2020/21 season.

Kaizer Chiefs felt they had found a gem after luring him to Naturena.

However, there was no goal or assist in 19 appearances from Sekgota in his first season under Stuart Baxter, playing from start to finish only once.

Arthur Zwane increased his minutes to almost 1,400 for the season, but there were still no goals from the winger who provided two assists.

Amakhosi decided to let go of Sekgota after getting no goals and just two assists in 1,850 minutes from him.

Stellenbosch FC then took a chance, but their patience only last half-a-season.

The 26-year-old played 17 games in half-a-season and scored just once but couldn't play matches from start to finish or provide assists.

This means in four years back in South Africa, Sekgota has been to four clubs and scored four goals.

His assist game has just been as worrying having delivered none at Stellies, two at Chiefs, two at Swallows and one at Wits.

He didn't score at Amakhosi and Wits.

Whatever happens next, goals and assists is an element of his game that he needs to improve on vastly to avoid fizzling out.
