My Muti Story: Vukile Mngqibisa

It's Muti Monday, and every Monday we get in touch with a former player where they share a memorable muti story from their playing days.

In this edition of My Muti Story, former Jomo Cosmos and Sivutsa player Vukile Mngqibisa share stories from both clubs.

Who and where did you play?

"My first experience with muti was at Jomo Cosmos. It was my first time in camp. It was round about 9 p.m. and we had just finished eating supper.

"Right after eating, we were told we had to go to a car wash. Mind you it's 9 p.m.

"But to my surprise when we got there there was no car wash but a one-roomed house with a muti man sitting inside. I kept on asking myself, what kind of car wash is this now?

"That time everybody is naked, after bathing in muti you wrapped yourself in a towel and ran straight to the team kombi. That's how Cosmos introduced me to muti.

"I was then loaned to Sivutsa! The team was on a bad run. So it was decided we would be taken to some muti man in Nkomazi.

"In Nkomazi goats were slaughtered and we were cleansed with dung, you can imagine the bad smell."

Why were you doing it?

"Apparently to cleanse the bad luck that was costing us games."

Who was the muti man?

"At Sivutsa we had another old man his name is Malambe. He was from Nelspruit.

"They used to change them a lot these muti men. I remember at one stage they brought someone who came with a Bible and he burnt our playing kit trying to make a fire in a small room.

"Our teammate, we used to call him Junior, he almost died because of smoke that night. Because he was asthmatic he coughed almost the whole night."

What did you have to do?

"For the muti to work properly we all had to believe in it. That's what we were told."

Did everybody take part?

"As players mostly we don't believe in such things, we do it to get game time."

What stood out?

"That experience taught me a lot about how it works. It's all about the belief."

What was the result?

"At Cosmos, we won promotion to the PSL that season. That was in 2008. And because of that the whole club was very happy with Muti.

"But at Sivutsa we lost even more matches. And we kept changing muti men every game."
