‘Once you start chasing money, you might not realize your dreams’

In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, former Free State Stars player Fees Moloi tells KickOff how he spent his first pay.

Moloi, who is a qualified school teacher by profession, reveals how he put his earnings into good news.

Who did you sign for?

"Free State Stars in 1994. They took me from an amateur team from QwaQwa called One For Sorry."

How much was it?

"It was R1 500. It was a lot those days because I was able to further my studies, hence, today, I'm a qualified teacher.

"It also enabled me to buy myself two cars as time went by. The club opened bank accounts for us at FNB, so they were the ones who would inform us if we'd been paid. Remember, those days when there was no cellphone banking, so you didn't receive notifications on your phone."

How did you celebrate?

"I didn't celebrate. I remember I rushed home to start building a seven-room house for my mother. I also bought a DStv and a television set for them."

For yourself, what did you buy?

"Because I was a huge fan of Mzwakhe Mbuli, I bought myself his CD, Pain is Change."

Did it last you the whole month?

"It did, because I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke. So it did last me the whole month.

"The club used to provide us with a transport to training. I had completed my matric in 1992.

"I'm now a permanent and full teacher because of Mr. Mike Mokoena's money.

"I appreciated whatever they used to pay me in football because I understood it was God's will.

"Once you start chasing after money too much, you might end up not realizing your dreams. So, to me, what mattered was to be alive. I appreciated life more than money. The rest will follow."
