Swallows legend: Dr. Khoza was the one paying my salary

In this edition of My First, KickOff catches up with former Moroka Swallows star Eric Ramasike.

Ramasike shares how he spent his last six months at the Dube Birds without getting a salary.

Ramasike says though he was a Swallows player, his salary was paid by Orlando Pirates chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza, rather than Swallows.

My First School:

"I attended Job Rathebe Primary School in Soweto, Orlando East. It was a lot of fun. We used to play soccer during break time. We would quickly finish our lunchboxes so we could find time to play soccer before returning to our classes."

My First Kiss:

"I was 16 years old and still in high school when I experienced my first kiss. She was my girlfriend, and I was quite well-known as a footballer at school."

First Club Supported Before Turning Pro:

"I have always been a Buccaneer. They are from my neighborhood in Orlando East, and I was raised as a Buccaneer.

"I remember when David Chabeli was refusing to hand over my clearance to Pirates after Sipho Dlengezele had a chat with Dr. Irvin Khoza, who was keen to sign me.

"I spent six months without a salary at Swallows, but I received money from Bra Irvin through a close friend of his who happened to own taxis. They were doing that in hopes that I would join Pirates once I got my clearance.

"I don't know what happened, but after those six months, I received a call from Angelo Tshiclas at Mamelodi Sundowns, telling me I should come to their offices. That's how I joined Sundowns."

My First Soccer Boots:

"I wore Adidas Copa Mundials. They were bought for me by Grinaker Rangers, where I played for their junior team."

My First Goal:

"I would be lying if I said I remember it. To be honest, I don't, but I did score some good goals."

My First Individual Award:

"I have never won any individual award."

My First Trophy With A Club:

"I was with Swallows when I won the BobSave Super Bowl. That was my first trophy, somewhere around the early nineties."

My First Car:

"It was either in 1991 or 1992 when I bought my first car, a Golf GTi. It cost me R15 000."
