Middendorp admirer Mokwena 'welcomed at Ikamva, but only as a visitor'

Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has responded to Rulani Mokwena's wish that he would love to work with their head coach, Ernst Middendorp.

Mokwena, who has been shown the door at Mamelodi Sundowns after losing only one league game last season, said in a radio interview earlier this week that he harbours an ambition of serving as an assistant coach under Middendorp.

The German tactician is currently a head coach at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Spurs.

Efstathiou says Mokwena is welcome at Ikamva but only as a guest.

"Yeah, ja, I heard something about coach Rulani Mokwena wanting to work with our coach Ernst Middendorp," Efstathiou explained, in a conversation with KickOff.

"At the moment, there is no space, but he is welcome to visit us anytime he wants.

"The thing is, we already have a technical team in place at the moment, but if he wants to visit us and spend time with us, that's fine with us, that's fine.

"He's done well Rulani Mokwena as a coach, maybe he needs to take on a new challenge now and prove himself even more.

"Sometimes when one door closes, another door opens. I think the challenge for him is maybe to take a smaller team that doesn't have all the richness and wealth that Mamelodi Sundowns have.

"That's where your coaching ability is actually tested, at a smaller club where he has to deal with a smaller budget.

"That's the biggest challenge, I think, for any coach."
