Where Are They Now: Michael Nkambule

This week in Where Are They Now, KickOff catches up with former Kaizer Chiefs player Michael Nkambule, about his life after football.

Who am I?

"I was five years old when I started playing football. At the amateur level I played for a team called Brazil, they were my gateway to the Kaizer Chiefs development. I grew up Etwatwa in Daveyton."

My playing days?

"I'm very happy, even though I didn't get enough playing time at Chiefs, but at least I managed to realize my dream of reaching that level.

"I'm grateful for that because there were better players than me but never had a chance to get to where I've been. My biggest highlight is playing in France. Moving there at such an early age was a different experience for me."

Did I make money from soccer?

"To be honest, I didn't make any from soccer. It's just that people they immediately see you on television they assume you are making a lot of money."

Where I'm living?

"Currently I keep myself busy with the likes of Junior Khanye, we're playing in some super league, we playing for Scorpions from Soweto."

Jobs since playing the game?

"Life after football for everyone grootman, and that's because we not planning for it. It's funny how people point at us and say we've misused our money when in truth there are players who made millions in football but still struggled in life after football.

"That's because we were never taught how to manage money. And this thing is continuous, whereas you find that even today footballers still find it difficult to survive after retiring.

"That's because we are clueless about things like investment. What we know is once you start earning R15 000-R20 000 you must go and buy yourself a Golf 7.

"Forgetting that you are on a contract job not permanent. Those who earn better, they rush to buy houses that are worth too much, how much are you going to repay in instalments on a R6 million house?"

My current job?

"I usually sell these chemicals that are put in paint. We are manufacturing paint and stuff."

If you could do it again?

"I would cut out all unnecessary friends. These people give you the wrong advice mostly."
