Kaizer Chiefs retire No. 20 jersey in honour of Howard Freese

Kaizer Chiefs have retired the iconic No. 20 jersey in honour of club legend Howard Freese.

On Thursday evening, Kaizer Chiefs chairman, Kaizer Motaung, announced that the club had officially retired the No. 20 jersey formerly worn by Freese in honour of the former Amakhosi captain's "significant" contributions to the club.

"Howard is a living dedication of the commitment you show to something you truly love and he is a living testimony to the spirit of Love and Peace that Kaizer Chiefs espouses," Motaung said.

"As Chairman of the Club, I would like to announce that his number should be properly retired. It will not feature again on the field of play, because of the significance of the contribution that has been made by Howard today."

The announcement was made after a special handover ceremony at Naturena earlier this week during which Freese donated a number of his famous jerseys and other memorabilia back to the club for preservation.

"I'm bringing these jerseys back home," the former centre-back told the club's website. "This is where they belong.

"When people ask what happened to the Chiefs generation of the 1980s and 1990s, this is a symbol and a reference of the Chiefs generation we represented, for everyone to see."

According to the club's record books, Freese won 28 trophies with Chiefs, including 13 official pieces of the silverware, and becomes only the second player to be honoured with the retirement of his jersey after Doctor Khumalo (No. 15).
