Augusto Palacios: Long Live, PSL chairman!

Augusto Palacios is very happy with the fact that the Premier Soccer League will retain Orlando Pirates boss Dr. Irvin Khoza as their chairman.

It has now been confirmed by the PSL that the position that is being held by the "Iron Duke" will again not be contested in the elections scheduled for this month.

"The chairman must stay and guide the next person who will take over from him," Palacios tells KickOff.

"His experience, you cannot just do away with it; like it or not, that one is a fact. Just now, we have a new sponsor for the league. Football, it benefits because of the chairman.

"It's not every chairman of a club that has the experience he has; even sponsors are at ease when signing deals with somebody they used to or somebody they can trust.

"Since he took over as the chairman of the league Dr. Khoza, the financial side of things has improved. He is trying his best to resolve issues between clubs and the players in salary disputes.

"Everyone can see the league is progressing with him at the helm. Today most clubs are being run with the PSL grant money.

"How many teams do we have that are without a sponsorship in the PSL but still they survive because of the grant?

"Whoever wants to take over from the chairman must make sure he works closely with him to learn as much as he can.

"Under the current chairman, we saw a new sponsor coming on board, and it increased the money.

"Under Dr. Khoza, we saw the DStv Diski Challenge being born, and now it's played over two legs.

"He shared his club's sponsor, Carling Black Label, with the rest of the league, and now we have the Carling Knockout.

"Remember, all along, it was only contested by Chiefs and Pirates as a pre-season friendly. I say, Long live Chairman.

"The national first division had no sponsor, and he brought them a sponsor.

"He's been consistent over the years, the chairman. And I'm not saying all this because I worked at Orlando Pirates. No, I'm simply stating the facts."
