Absalom 'Scara' Thindwa opens up about Orlando Pirates stint

Absalom 'Scara' Thindwa reveals how he actually played for Orlando Pirates prior to becoming a Kaizer Chiefs legend, but the Buccaneers lost him.

Today the Swazi former footballer enjoys legend status at Amakhosi and works as a TV analyst at SuperSport.

He arrived in South Africa in 1985 together with William 'Cool Cat' Shongwe and joined a Chiefs team that did not want to be second-best to anybody at the time.

"Remember, when I came here it was during the time teams were playing under the NPSL banner," Thindwa tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"And then the likes of Kaizer and the late Sixty Mali, they decided to start a new league, the NSL, National Soccer League.

"So the likes of Patson Banda and Shakes Mashaba, they were the ones who came to fetch me in Swaziland. Now because of the new league starting, Pirates ended up having two teams.

"There was a team which was run by Thabo Modia. He was the chairperson who remained with the old league, and then Sixty Mali left with the new league.

"Because I came with the likes of Patson, they associated themselves with Thabo Modia, so they remained with the old Pirates.

"Now they did not have funds, and as a result I ended up going to Swaziland. When I went back to Swaziland, Kaizer [Motaung] had already started talking with the late Ted Dumitru. Dumitru was a technical director in Swaziland.

"What I think might have happened is that Ted recommended Kaizer sign me and after all I had already played a couple of friendly games before the league could start in January. But Kaizer signed me around August of 1985. So that is what happened.

"I went back to Swaziland because I wasn't getting paid at Pirates. Remember, I came here because I wanted to play and get paid. So when that didn't happen, I then went back to Swaziland. And once I was in Swaziland then Kaizer came, then the negotiations started. That's how it happened.

"Kaizer and Sixty Mali spoke, they agreed that I can go to Chiefs. There were no problems when I left Pirates. By coming here I thought I would make money [laughs], but unfortunately there was no money at the time.

"At the time it was only Chiefs, Pirates and Swallows we knew about."

Thindwa's last club was Wits under coach John Lathan.
