Abel Chacklas Shongwe hails Jeff Butler

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Abel Shongwe has described the late Jeff Butler as one of the better coaches to work with at Amakhosi.

Butler was the first coach to be hired to lead Bafana Bafana after re-admission to international football by FIFA in 1992.

But he was quickly fired without taking charge of an official game after allegedly falsifying his CV.

The Englishman won nine major trophies with Amakhosi including three NSL titles (1989, 1991, 1992) and also won the league with Mamelodi Sundowns (1993) before leaving the country for Botswana in 1999.

'Chacklas' says he enjoyed working with Buttler at Chiefs even though at one time he forced him to leave the club for Wits University.

"He was okay. He was a good coach and great motivator. He knew how to motivate players," Shongwe tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"Even though at one stage he forced me to leave Chiefs because he didn't give me a chance. I decided to go to the chairman and asked him to release me because I was not getting game-time.

"I was competing with Scara Thindwa and Nelson Teenage Dladla on the left and couldn't take it anymore coming off the bench for the last 10 minutes.

"I went to Wits on loan and came back the following season. He started playing me after he saw how good I was at Wits. We had no problems after that.

"I saw later those stories [of a fake CV] but he was a good coach and his training sessions were enjoyable. May his soul rest in peace."

Butler died in 2017 after a long illness aged 83.
