Where Are They Now - Thabang Molefe

In the latest edition of the feature, Where Are They Now, KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos hardman Thabang Molefe about life after football.

Who am I?

"Thabang Molefe was born in Potchefstroom in 1979. I'm the last born of three children, I started my football career at Jomo Cosmos Development. I was only 17 years."

My playing days…

"Ya to be honest I've achieved a lot in football. Remember I've played in a FIFA World Cup, and also played overseas.

"I played in Slovenia, Norway and in France. I also won the Coca-Cola Cup here in South Africa. On the pitch, I wasn't rough, but I was hard."

Did you make money from playing soccer?

"Yes, obviously when you play overseas you will make money. Very few players did well after retiring but most of us managed to get ourselves out of that mess.

"Yes, it wasn't the case of money I made from football setting me up nicely for life after football.

"But it did push me up a little bit after football then it was gone (chuckling)."

Where I'm living?

"I'm living with my mom at home in Potchefstroom."

Jobs since playing the game?

"I work at Avis Car Rental. I've been doing this ever since I retired. I'm a driver. You know it comes a point in life where you have to work my man, it doesn't matter what kind of job you'll be doing. You have to put food on the table for the kids."

If you could do it again…

"When it comes to playing football, I wouldn't change anything. But when it comes to finances, I wish I had proper advice on things like signing-on fees.

"I wish I had an agent, but I didn't have anyone representing me in my whole career.

"That's why I couldn't get proper deals for myself."
