In this week's feature of Where Are They Now, KickOff catches up with Orlando Pirates 1988 BobSave SuperBowl hero Lawrence "Killer" Maake.
The retired Maake reveals what he has been up to these days in his hometown of Pretoria.
Who am I?
"Lawrence Maake is from Mabopane, that's where I grew up in Pretoria. I grew up together with Dan Malesela, and we attended the same school in the same neighborhood. He is the one who recommended me to Pirates."
My playing days?
"I didn't reach my potential, I think I underachieved because I wasn't too ambitious. I probably didn't understand the stage I was in at that time.
"When we won the 1988 BobSave SuperBowl, we went to one of the club owners' house for celebrations, but during the festivities, I told Dan Malesela that I wanted to go home. I didn't understand the moment.
"And also, my retirement wasn't planned. I didn't achieve a lot. But for the fact that I managed to score several goals for a team like Pirates...to me, that's an achievement."
Did I make money from soccer?
"(Laughs) I wouldn't say so, I think I only played one season in the PSL, and that's when money started rolling in.
"The best I made in the PSL era was a signing-on fee of R25 000 that I received from Mamelodi Sundowns. Though I never got to play for them, I think I only played 15 minutes at Sundowns.
"Again it was Dan Malesela who took me there, he wanted me to join him wherever he went (laughs)."
Where I'm living?
"I'm now back in Mabopane"
Jobs since playing the game?
"I've always been a schoolteacher, even when I was still playing. I teach Mathematics. I tried to study as far as I could. I've always had a career."
If I could do it again?
"I'd take my football more seriously, I only got to understand some of the things when I had grown up, things the supporters had to go through to come and watch us."
