Record chase for Riveiro at Pirates

Jose Riveiro's calm demeanour has been as noticeable as the success that he has brought to Orlando Pirates since taking over two years ago.

Pirates won two trophies in his first season – the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup – and then went on to defend those titles, putting him in a seat that has never been occupied before.

No coach has come into the PSL and won two cups in his first year, which he then went to defend, the way Riveiro has done.

The Spaniard has it all secured for his third season at Pirates and will become only the second ever gaffer after Rudi Krol to hopefully complete three full seasons in this difficult job.

Up in the stands, The Ghost is no longer a disgruntled lot and have taken to appreciation of Riveiro's work.

For all the work that has been done during pre-season, the latest journey starts with the MTN8 on Saturday at Orlando (18h00).

"It has been a good time for all of us in Spain, as it was an opportunity to compete with different and powerful sides," says Riveiro.

"It gave us an idea of the space where we are and now, we are back here ready to face our first challenge.

"To defend the title one more time is a unique opportunity to do it again and respecting a lot the side that we have in front of us on Saturday," Riveiro adds.

This season will be the third from the contract that he signed when joining Pirates and so will determine so much more for him.

Pirates have been the most successful club in the Top 8 competition since MTN took over sponsorship in 2008, with five titles.
