Pirates winger details hijacking nightmare

Orlando Pirates midfielder Vincent Pule has opened up on a traumatic hijacking ordeal he went through at the beginning of last season.

Pule, who joined the Buccaneers from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in the 2018/19 season, proved an immediate hit when joining the Buccaneers.

"I think the last three days before we left, my quad injury came back. I had to see the physio again, and underwent treatment when we were playing against Swallows, I think we won 1-0," Pule told the Bucs Camp programme.

"Then on that Sunday, because we played on a Saturday, I went out with my wife and child. I wanted to quickly go buy bread because I had forgotten. So I went to the Shell garage, brought bread and an energy drink.

"I was parked near the entrance and when I went back to the car, I could feel that there was someone behind me. As I opened my car door, a man attacked me from the back and said, 'Come'.

"I begged them not to do anything to my wife and child and they agreed. They forced me into their car and that's the last time I saw my car. So, they drove around with me the whole night.

"They wanted access to my banking apps, they left my family at the petrol station, they took my car. I was sitting in the back seat so they moved me and put me in the boot, I was in the boot for five or six hours, they drove around with me and they left me in Soweto in the middle of nowhere," Pule said.

"I think it was about 1:15 AM. I didn't know anyone there or anything. I think what helped was that I wasn't terrified. Luckily, I came across a petrol station and asked the staff to take me home.

"But they told me they didn't know anyone in that area so luckily an Uber driver arrived so I asked the Uber driver to take me home. I told him I was hijacked. He didn't even recognise me when he looked properly then he recognised and agreed to help me and take me home."

The Buccaneers, who recently lifted the MTN8 after a penalty shootout win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, host Cape Town Spurs in the Carling Knockout Cup next weekend.
