Unmatched history in the reckoning for Riveiro

The 50th edition of the MTN8 final will come with significance for Orlando Pirates as they seek to mark the half-century of the competition with a historic trophy lift.

Pirates come up against Stellenbosch FC in this year's final to be played at a sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (18:00).

Of interest is the fact after having won the inaugural edition back in 1972, they can go up the podium as champions on the year the competition plays out its 50th final.

Masterminding that mission on Saturday will be Jose Riveiro, who wasn't born when Bucs won that first ever final with a 3-2 score against Kaizer Chiefs.

For all the years that the Top 8 has been played under different sponsors – 15 clubs have won it, yet none have done so three years in a row.

Chiefs have enjoyed the most success with 15 titles, but they have never done it in three consecutive years.

Pirates' opportunity has come with Riveiro on the bench.

The Spaniard has won the MTN8 for all his time in South Africa, having lifted the trophy in his first season in 2022, before defending it last term.

While Pirates will become the first club to do it three times in a row should they win on Saturday, Riveiro will also be the first coach to do the same three years in a row with the same club.

He will have banked R26 million in only one competition from his three wins if Pirates' name is engraved on the trophy again.

"Focus is on the responsibility ahead of us to make sure that we can put in a good performance on Saturday.

"It is a final and a different game and no ordinary game, a game of high emotions with a lot of questions to answer.

"We know the level of the opponent that we are going to face," says Riveiro.

If ever there was need for added motivation to win it this year, then the prize money increment to R10 million provides the sweetener.

This is the 19th final that Pirates will be playing having already won 12.

Saturday's match will also be the third different opponent in the final for Pirates having played AmaZulu FC (2022) and Mamelodi Sundowns (2023) in the last two.
