REPORT CARD: Pirates take lead ahead of Chiefs & Downs in transfer chaser race

As far as transfer business is concerned, Orlando Pirates have seemingly taken the lead over rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs ahead of the new season expected to begin in August.

Despite the heartbreak of losing the Nedbank Cup final to old nemesis Chiefs and being knocked out of the CAF Champions League in the semi-finals, Pirates look determined to come back stronger.

So far, they have successfully 'hijacked' free agent Sipho Mbule, who was seemingly destined for a move to Naturena to the big announcement on Wednesday.

But even aside from that, the Buccaneers have also done plenty of business behind the scenes, edging out both their neighbours and defending champions Sundowns in the transfer market.

On Thursday, the club unveiled a massive seven new players ahead of the transfer window, which officially opens on July 1.

These include Sinoxolo Kwayiba from Chippa United, former AmaZulu FC star Tshepand Moremi, Sihle Nduli who joins from Stellenbosch FC, Masindi Nemtajela who reunites with former Marumo Gallants coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, defender Tshepo Mashiloane from Baroka FC and Richards Bay FC duo Yanela Mbuthuma and Nkosikhona Ndaba.

Granted, the Brazilians have been busy with FIFA Club World Cup matters and, as they make their way back to South Africa, will have to make dive into the market with the new season fast approaching.

So far, they are linked with a move for deadly Pyramids FC striker Fiston Mayele.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi are not too far behind having reportedly completed a deal for 26-year-old midfielder Ethan Chislett.

Additionally, ex-Pirates duo Thabiso Monyane and Paseko Mako are believed to have also joined after parting ways with a club where they both have spent a number of years.

Nasreddine Nabi's men are set to depart for a pre-season camp in the Netherlands, where they will be based on 3-19 July, and will look to have a few of their signings part of the tour.

Though Bucs' departure date is yet to be confirmed, it has been confirmed they will once more be heading out to Spain, where a series of friendlies have been lined up, including one against English side Bolton Wanderers on 11 July.
