Appollis warned: That's what kills players a lot at big clubs

An Orlando Pirates legend has sent a message of warning to new signing Oswin Appollis after finally making the move away from Polokwane City.

Appollis' transfer was the most anticipated from last season, after a breakout 2023/24 campaign with Polokwane City.

Following much speculation regarding which big team the speedy attacker would join, including suitors in North Africa in the previous winter, he surprisingly did not move an inch, despite reports of multiple bids for his services.

With his contract seemingly running down at the Limpopo club, it was only a matter of time before they had to cash in on his services.

Pirates hogged the headlines after announcing the pint-sized attacker as one of their new acquisitions at the beginning of July.

Even though another Buccaneer signing Sipho Mbule is touted to be a coup by the Soweto giants, Appollis' capture has largely been regarded by fans as arguably the biggest, or the most significant, transfer since the window opened on 1 July.

Former Bucs fan-favourite Steve Lekoelea, however, has suggested that type of a hype is what leads new signings to being complacent at big clubs after arriving from the so-called small teams.

"I hear people say he's a biggest signing (in this transfer window), but this thing is what kills players a lot of the times," notes Lekoelea.

"Because (for example) a player was performing in his previous team Polokwane... many players when they arrive at a big team, they start to relax and that's when the hard work should start. But they relax.

"But I don't think Appollis would do that because he's a good player, he is a national team player. I think he will do well," he continued.

As previously reported, KickOff.com understands his new employers landed the 23-year-old for around R12 million, significantly lower than when he was on high demand at the end of 2023/24.
