"It was not our day" - Riveiro on Pirates' cup exit

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has given his thoughts after they were eliminated from the Carling Knockout in the first round following a 3-2 defeat to Magesi.

Pirates were 3-0 down at halftime after goals for Dikwena by Delano Abrahams, an own goal by Thabiso Sesane and Edmore Chirambadare.

Even though the Buccaneers reacted late, after Kabelo Dlamini and Evidence Makgopa scored two goals in the last four minutes, the Soweto giants almost forced the game to extra-time after they had a goal disallowed for offside in added time.

Riveiro has suggested that they did not play well collectively, after he made six changes from the team that beat Stellenbosch in the MTN8 final.

"We didn't play that bad, even in the first-half 2-0 down but the goals were something obscene, to be honest we cannot afford to defend those situations as a team because it was not individual mistakes," Riveiro said on SuperSport TV.

"Sometimes it happens, it was as a collective, [it's] something to be concerned [about] from my side. 3-0 at half-time, it was really difficult to come back, we tried until the end, we were close.

"It's difficult to explain that we didn't score more than one or two goals but congratulations to the opponent, they did their job, they managed to slow down the game enough to utilize their chances in transitions, that's the reading of the game," Riveiro said.

The Spanish coach, however, rued the chances they missed, especially in the second stanza.

"[Mohau] Nkota, Rele [Mofokeng], [Tshegofatso] Mabasa, everybody had different types of chances today but it was not our day in front of goal. We could not even solve the problem that we created ourselves in the first-half, because we created more than enough," Riveiro said.

"Today was not our day, congratulations to Magesi and we move to the next one," the 47-year-old mentor added.
