Gone but not forgotten: Senzo Meyiwa – 10 years later…

The evening of October 26, 2014, will forever have a black stain in the history of South African football as this was the day Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead.

Meyiwa had been in Vosloorus on the East Rand at the home of his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo when he met his untimely death.

While it is known that a gun was used, the murder trial continues in court.

For the football fan, Meyiwa's death came just a day after he kept goals in the rain at Orlando Stadium in a 4-1 win over Ajax Cape Town.

As he walked into the tunnel after saluting the fans at the end of that match, little did the Ghost know that this would be the end of a career that was blossoming after years of struggles.

Meyiwa had played every minute for Orlando Pirates at the start of that 2014/15 season while also doubling up as captain for Bafana Bafana, where he had kept clean sheets in earning his last four caps.

What was finally happening was what he had long desired throughout all the 10 years that he had been in the Bucs first team after being promoted just after Williams Okpara retired in 2005.

His debut was against hometown club AmaZulu FC in November 2006 on a day he was unfortunate to get injured and be substituted.

Meyiwa's proper break then came in the 2007/08 season just after Owen Da Gama took over as he went on to play 25 games.

Nzori's bubbly nature was evident when he arrived for his first major interview with this publication accompanied by Lindokuhle Mkhwanazi, who had also just broken into the first team.

Former KICK OFF employee and now agent Trevor Mosehathebe laughed himself to tears courtesy of Meyiwa's jokes and ability to imitate everyone he spoke about, with Mkhwanazi on board with the 'sauce'.

By then, Meyiwa had already earned caps for all junior national teams, where he gave Itumeleng Khune competition in the Amaglug-glug squad coached by Steve Komphela.

Unfortunately, the arrival of Moeneeb Josephs at the Soweto giants in 2008 limited his minutes for four years in a row, before he got his big chance again in the 2012/13 campaign, playing as a regular until he met his untimely death.

He had started 157 games for Pirates by then.

Gone but not forgotten.
