Glorious memories for Pirates' latest trip

Orlando Pirates' arrival in the scenic city of Abidjan for their CAF Champions League match against Stade d'Abidjan will carry unparalleled memories.

Pirates are in the capital city of Cote d'Ivoire for their third match in the group stage, which will be played at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny.

The Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan is where Bucs won their only CAF Champions League (then referred to as the African Cup of Champions Clubs) title on the afternoon of December 16, 1995.

Twenty-nine years later, this venue in Le Plateau, Abidjan which has since undergone several renovations through the years, will host the men in Black and White again.

Pirates did get a 4-0 group stage drubbing in the 2006 edition at this stadium against ASEC Mimosas, but they still went on to reach the semi-finals, so that result didn't really hurt so much.

What the Soweto giants and their fans will remember about this venue in the Champions League is that famous Saturday afternoon in 1995 when Jerry Sikhosana stabbed home the most important goal of his career.

After appearing to have lost the advantage following a 2-2 draw at home in the first leg of that 1995 final against ASEC Mimosas, Pirates staged a hit-and-run 1-0 win to finish as 3-2 aggregate winners.

The star on the jersey which Pirates fans have for long bragged about was stitched at the venue where they play again on Saturday (18:00).

From the squad that the Buccaneers now have and based on age – Makhehlene Makhaula and Deon Hotto were likely not even in Grade 1, Innocent Maela, Miguel Timm, Thabiso Lebitso, Paseka Mako were toddlers, while Nkosinathi Sibisi, Bandile Shandu and Tapelo Xoki were still in their nappies.

The rest were not even born, so whatever they know about 1995 is what they read, heard, or got glimpses of through blurry videos available online.

Pirates were also in Abidjan for the semi-finals of the 1999 African Cup Winners Cup against Africa Sports, which they lost 3-1 at the Stade Robert Champroux.

Jose Riveiro has touched down in Abidjan having watched his team fail to score in the last two matches against Stellenbosch FC and Al Ahly.

Bucs will move top of the group with a win or draw as Al Ahly and CR Belouizdad only play on December 22.
