Pirates warned: 'History doesn't win you things'

Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United legend Ronnie "Mainline" Zondi has sent a stern warning to the Soweto giants as the two sides prepare to do battle in the MTN8 quarterfinal at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Pule is part of the SuperSport team that will face the Sea Robbers in the MTN8 encounter following his release by Pirates.

Both Jose Riveiro and Gavin Hunt have strengthened their squad nicely this season, and all their new players will be on display on the weekend as Pirates begin the defense of their MTN8 trophy.

"It's too early in the year to say much; in both teams, there are players who have been released there are's players who have come in," Zondi points out, previewing the game with KickOff.

"Both teams will rely on the MTN8 in terms of gauging what's going to happen this season. Games between SuperSport United and Pirates are always interesting.

"SuperSport United can hold its own against the big guns, but I guess this game is for Pirates to lose.

"Most definitely, Vincent Pule will want to prove a point to Pirates. This is a good platform for him to show them they have made a mistake.

"But for Pule to stand out, he will need assistance from his new teammates. He can't do much on his own because the Pirates players know him very well. they can plan around him," adds the former centre-back.

Zondi says the Soweto giants' recent success in cup competitions can easily turn to be their downfall if they do not tread carefully.

"Players may think this one is gonna be a walk in the park. Well, what happens in the past must remain in the past.

"Should Pirates lose against SuperSport on Saturday, a lot is going to be said about their players and the technical team.

"The technical team should step up and speak some sense into players because history doesn't win you things."

Kick-off is at 18:00.
