Offside called on Du Preez dagger into Downs hearts

The record has been set straight on Ashley Du Preez's controversial winning goal as Kaizer Chiefs dumped Mamelodi Sundowns out of the Nedbank Cup in the semi-finals.

Much to the jubilation of their fans, Chiefs have booked their place in the final of the Nedbank Cup after a 2-1 win over Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday, aiming to end a barren silverware run that is threatening to go over the decade mark.

As they prepare to face rivals Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium on May 10, their winning goal in the semi-finals continues to dominate conversations.

Speedy attacker Du Preez appeared to be offside when a cross from George Matlou located him in the box in the 88th minute.

Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso whipped out a cellphone during his post-match press conference to highlight what he believed was an incorrect decision.

Reviewing the goal on SABC Sport's Soccer Zone on Monday evening, former FIFA referee Victor Hlungwani explained why The Brazilians have a right to feel aggrieved by the officiating on the day.

"The offside law states that when a player is nearer to his opponent's goal than both the ball and the second-last opponent, (he is offside)," Hlungwani said.

"Let's see nearer to the goal line and then both the ball and the second-last opponent.

"You can see Du Preez is nearer when George Matlou crosses the ball, he is nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.

"So, that is offside.

"So, we wait for interference because we say it is not an offence to be in an offside position. When the ball is played and you play the ball, then you are now interfering with play. Therefore, the flag should come up for offside.

"What made the assistant's decision a wrong call is because he was wrongly positioned," he explained.

It will matter little to Amakhosi, who have recorded their first win over the Tshwane giants after four meetings this season.
