Chiefs have once again fizzled out of the running for the Absa Premiership title, which has eluded them for a third successive season, as Mamelodi Sundowns now look set to go all the way.
Amakhosi are currently in fourth position on the log, with their best hope being a second-place finish – although this would require arch-rivals Orlando Pirates to drop at least eight of the remaining nine points on offer.
Then there is also the threat of Maritzburg United, who are level on points with The Glamour Boys but sit above them thanks to a superior goal-difference as they occupy the final CAF qualifying spot in the league.
However, Chiefs are still in the running for silverware as they will contest the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup against Free State Stars at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.
Ngezana has, in the build-up to the encounter, stressed the importance of ending their three-year trophy drought, while adding that securing their place in the next edition of the CAF Confederation Cup would come as an added bonus.
“Setbacks are opportunities for great comebacks, and we’re fully focused on the game on Saturday, which is a big one for us and for our fans,” said Ngezana.
“We need to have something to brag about at the end of the season, and we need to fulfil our promises that we made to our supporters at the start of the season.
“We haven’t won anything for the past three seasons, and I think we need to win this weekend’s game more than Free State Stars do.
“In fact, we need the Nedbank Cup as a whole because it also comes with CAF qualification, so this is the one we’re pinning our focus on.”
