Pitso Mosimane reaffirms admiration for Steve Komphela

Mosimane and Komphela go back a long way to their playing days, having both represented Bafana Bafana in the early to mid-1990s, as well as working together at the national team.

With the Chiefs mentor’s stay at Naturena expected to come to an end in June, many fans are relishing his departure as a result of his failure to win silverware with the club.

However, Komphela has repeatedly insisted that his Amakhosi journey has been about more than just winning a trophy, but rather overseeing “a process” – one which few have been able to identify.

Asked if perhaps he could see his former teammate and colleague’s vision for Chiefs, Mosimane refused to engage in potentially controversial remarks and instead declared his wish to see Komphela’s preservation in football.

“You’re giving me a handball. I don’t want to catch a handball in the box,” Mosimane defended jokingly, before voicing his support for his former Bafana Bafana teammate.

“You know Steve is my brother, he’s my friend. I want Steve to stay in football because we need to survive as local coaches, especially black coaches. So, I want him to hang around.

“You know my feelings about Steve, it’s not about the game. He’s a guy that I used to fly around with from Greece and Turkey to play for Bafana – he was my captain.

“We go beyond that, he’s a guy I brought to work with me in Bafana Bafana, he helped me and I remember you guys were saying, ‘How can you bring two bulls in one kraal?’

“To me, it’s not about that, it’s how I deal with people. I brought Gavin Hunt to help me as an assistant with Bafana, when we went to Zambia – no issues.

“I’ve brought Manqoba [Mnqithi] to work with me, he’s a full-time coach – no problems. I brought Jairo Leal, who won the World Cup, to work with me. So, I can work with experienced coaches.

“I have a soft spot for Steve, and it’s outside the game. So, I would not answer that.”
