Patrick Phungwayo believes Free State Stars can build on Nedbank Cup triumph under Luc Eymael

Ea Lla Koto won their first major trophy in 24 years when they beat Maritzburg United 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup final in Cape Town on Saturday, ending an incredible season with something to display in the cabinet.

Stars finished sixth in the Absa Premiership and now the challenge is to make sure they do not go backwards next season.

“It does not end here. Depending if the coach [stays or goes] because there’s rumours out there. We will see, but we have a good team and we are capable,” he tells KickOff.com.

“Every time the [transfer] window opens players move, so nothing is guaranteed right now, to say we will win again. But we are looking forward to next season.”

The former Orlando Pirates left-back says they were happy to win a trophy because captain Paulus Masehe deserved to win a major title with a club he has been with since 2011.

“To be honest I am so happy. As a team we owed it to ourselves. I am so happy for my captain Paulus Masehe because he has been part of this team for so many years without winning a major trophy. Even if he decides to retire tomorrow, he will go out in style because he was part of the team that brought the trophy home.”
