Middendorp repeatedly expressed his discontent over the condition of the surface during their Nedbank Cup Last 16 penalty shootout defeat away to Highlands on Saturday evening.
The German explained that the pitch did not allow Chiefs to play the passing game they had initially set out to, with the rain having also left the field waterlogged in some areas.
However, Da Gama hit back by reminding his counterpart that they walked away victorious in August last year at the very same venue, before suggesting that a big side like Amakhosi cannot be complaining about pitches when this is a widespread issue on the continent.
"Look, they beat us here on this same pitch [in the first game of the season], so I don't know… We can talk about pitches and that, but these are conditions that you have to [get used to]," said Da Gama.
"If you go to Africa, you're going to get worse than this. So, yes, maybe it didn't suit their kind of football, but it happens. When we go to other pitches and it's full of water and wet in Cape Town, we have to get on with it.
"There's a drought in Cape Town but the field is full of water, and we have to take this. Look, I understand where the coach is coming from, they'd like to keep the ball on the ground, but you have to be able to play in any conditions."
