Amakhosi are all but out of the race for the Absa Premiership, so they have to put all their focus into winning the Nedbank Cup, the last knockout competition on offer this season.
Chiefs host Baroka FC at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in a last eight clash tonight, needing to give a solid performance to overcome their unpredictable opponents.
“Matches that we play against Baroka are always very intense. We know that we have go win this one, so that we go into the semis. They play with lots of energy, they have lots of quality players and that energy, with the element of excitement that they are playing against Kaizer Chiefs, elevates the match. We are expecting a tough match,” said the former Free State Stars and Maritzburg United coach.
He added: “This is the last one for the season, except the Absa Premiership, and our preparations have gone well. The players look focused and we know the responsibility lying on our shoulders asd coaches and players, that we are the only ones who have the best opportunity to do proud our supporters and administrators and that’s what keeps us in this business.”
Komphela is wary of a Baroka side that has not lost since interim coach MacDonald Makhubedu.
“They’ve come to understand the current coach they are working with. There’s a threat from their individuals, whether you talking about their midfield of [Mduduzi] Mdantsane, [Letladi] Madubanya, [Goodman] Mosele, depending on who they have. In their striking force there’s Lucky Nguzana, I worked with him. We know Lewis Macha and we all know Gift Motupa. They are very threatening on the wings, depending on who they deploy, whether it’s [Talent] Chawapihwa or Robin [Ngalande] or [Sipho] Moeti. Those are all the things you look at going into the match. We are looking forward to it.”
