Phunya Sele Sele have managed just a single cup success over the Soweto side in nearly three decades – an SAA Supa8 quarter-final victory in 2005.
Current Chiefs star Siyabonga Nkosi was on the scoresheet for Celtic on that day along with Collins Chabalala as Paul Dolezar’s side won 2-1. Louis Agyemang got the goal for Chiefs.
Celtic went on to lift the trophy that season, beating SuperSport United in the final.
For the rest though it has been a tale of woe for the Bloemfontein club.
Their first cup meeting in the new National Soccer League was a second round clash in the Biob Save SuperBowl in 1988 that Chiefs won 2-1, Chippa Molatedi and Mike Mangena on the scoresheet for AmaKhosi.
Celtic took Chiefs to a replay a year later when the teams drew 2-2 in the quarter-finals of the JPS Knockout, but Ace Khuse found a winner in the second game to see Chiefs advance 1-0.
It was not until the 1996/97 season that the teams met again, this time in a Bob Save Super Bowl quarter-final that Chiefs won 3-0, Pollen Ndlanya among their scorers that day.
The following season they met over two legs in the Rothmans Cup and after a 2-2 draw in Bloemfontein, Chiefs won the return 2-0 thanks to goals from Shakes Kungwane and Mark Williams.
The biggest win between the two came in the 2000/01 season when Chiefs routed Celtic 5-0, Jabu Pule (now Mahlangu) getting a hat-trick on the day.
After Celtic had ousted Chiefs in the 2005 SAA Supa8, the teams clashed in the Telkom Knockout semi-finals two years later and this time a Gerald Sibeko goal settled the tie in Chiefs favour.
The last cup meeting came in the MTN8 quarter-finals in 2010 when Knowledge Musona scored the only goal of the game for Chiefs.
