Thulani Hlatswayo feels cancelled Orlando Pirates game helped Bidvest Wits' MTN8 cause

Wits were crowned MTN8 champions after beating Mamelodi Sundowns by 3-0 in Mpumalanga on Saturday, with the Clever Boys looking the fresher of the two sides.

In stark contrast to Sundowns’ build-up to the final, which included two massive CAF Champions League semi-final clashes against Zesco United, Wits had not played a competitive game for 11 days following the postponement of last week’s league clash against Pirates, as well as their midweek tie against Ajax Cape Town.

Skipper Hlatswayo feels his side were deserving winners of the trophy, but admits the extra preparation time worked to his side’s advantage.

"We played well as a team,” he said. “We knew what kind of team they are and we made sure we performed on the day.

"We had been doing that this whole week and fortunately the cancelled game against Pirates gave us a good opportunity to prepare well for the final.”

Wits next league encounter will only take place after the FIFA international break in over three weeks’ time, when they face the Urban Warriors in Cape Town on 26 October.
