Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane plays down early MTN8 exit to Maritzburg United

The Brazilians looked blunt in attack as they eventually succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at home against Maritzburg United in the quarter-finals, leaving the African champions shellshocked at the first hurdle of 2017/18.

And while Mosimane admits his side were far from their lethal best, he preferred not to put too much stock into their lacklustre opening-day display.

Speaking to SuperSport TV, Mosimane said: “We have not found ourselves, [but] we will find ourselves.

“It’s unfortunate that the first game of the programme is the MTN8 and you know, in South Africa we get emotional with the cups, but it’s ok, we can’t win all the cups, so we’ll continue.”

Mosimane was able to take some positives from the match, which saw former Orlando Pirates captain Oupa Manyisa and ex-Kaizer Chiefs winger George Lebese make their Sundowns debuts.

The coach said: “We have to give them [the new signings] a run. You can see they fit in well, they know how to play, we signed the players that suit the way we play and they’ll get there, it’s okay, it’s a long way."
