Shongwe picks up the pieces again

Forgotten midfielder Jabulani Shongwe is back in the professional ranks for another run after taking up the opportunity to return to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Shongwe last played in the DStv Premiership in the colours of Highlands Park four years ago and since then his career has turned into a struggle in the second-tier league.

Since playing for Highlands, Shongwe has been with Royal Eagles/Royal AM in the first division during parts of the 2020/21 campaign before then linking up with Venda FC for the 2021/22 season.

For this season, Shongwe will be doing duty at Pretoria Callies after agreeing to join on a season long deal.

So much was expected of Shongwe when he was promoted to the Mamelodi Sundowns first team from ALS Puk Tawana just after the 2010 World Cup, but he came stuck at Chloorkop.

A single goal in three-and-a-half years at Sundowns led to a loan move to BidVest Wits which was turned into a permanent transfer but was soon moved to Golden Arrows, Chippa United, and Highlands Park in consecutive years as he faded away.

Along the way, Shongwe (now 33) won seven Bafana Bafana caps.
