The long list of clubs that Mthembu has done duty for has included AmaZulu, Cape Town City, Free State Stars, Golden Arrows, Platinum Stars, and Bloemfontein Celtic.
A month before he turns 36, the battle-hardened striker will be staying on at Pretoria Callies.
Mthembu has been at Callies since December 2022 and scored five goals through the second half of last season.
Callies have been satisfied with the contribution and the influence that he has had in the dressing room.
Meanwhile, Kwanele Kopo has been running the rule over pre-season at Callies who have been training at Maritimo Sports Club in Hatfield, Pretoria.
Kopo – who was linked with a move to Chippa United last month – is being assisted by Bushy Moloi.
