CT City stumble, Leopards start with 10 players

Cape Town City 0-0 Venda Football Academy

Cape Town City began life in the Motsepe Foundation Championship on the back-foot following a goalless draw with the Venda Football Academy on Saturday.

The Citizens, who were demoted from the top flight last season, looked for a positive start but couldn’t break down the men from Limpopo and ultimately settled for a draw.

Black Leopards 0-3 Casric Stars

Black Leopards made a disappointing start to the season following a 3-0 loss to Casric Stars at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

The match itself wasn’t without drama this as Lidoda Duvha played with ten players from the start following an issue with player registration.

It swayed the tide for the visitors, who in the end bagged a comprehensive victory courtesy of goals from Decide Chauke, Simon Moukete and Future Mohlala.

Highbury FC 1-1 University of Pretoria

Highbury FC were unable to register victory on the opening day following a 1-1 draw with the University of Pretoria on Friday.

Now in their second season, the host didn’t struggle to get going and took a halftime lead courtesy of Siyabonga Dubula.

AmaTuks laboured for large parts of the match, but in the end salvaged a share of the spoils through new signing Prince Nxumalo.

Gomora United 1-0 Leicesterfield

Newly-promoted Gomora United started their debut campaign in the second tier positively and narrowly edged Leicesterfield 1-0 at the TUT Stadium.

Having won promotion from the ABC Motsepe League play-offs, the home team were keen to make their intentions known and did so thanks to Xola Mosiea's strike.

Milford FC 1-0 Lerumo Lions

Milford FC enjoyed a positive start to their campaign with a 1-0 win over Lerumo Lions 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium.

There were no goals in the opening period of the match, with matters tightly contested and not a handful of clear-cut scoring chances.

However, the host proved superior in the end with Nqaba Xulu providing the all-important goal to secure the win.

Upington City 4-2 Kruger United

Upingon City made a solid start to the season with a 4-2 win over Kruger United on Saturday.

Bafana Ba Gucci, who have had a lukewarm campaign last time out, hit the ground running earlier on through Mziwokuthula Zimu.

The visitors replied in the matter of minutes courtesy of Kgopotso Zitha, but Zimu and Lesedi Motha restored advantage shortly before the interval.

Zitha was on hand again and granted the visitors a glimmer of hope a minute to halftime with a spot-kick, but Motha dispelled any comeback and ensured maximum points.

Midlands Wanderers 1-0 Hungry Lions

Hungry Lions failed to overcome the new boys Midlands Wanderers and succumbed to a 1-0 loss in the Motsepe Foundation Championship on Sunday.

The match was fiercely contested right from the start and no goals were recorded in the first spell until a penalty from Nkockhona Gazu in the second period separated matters.

The Bees 2-1 Baroka FC

Newly-promoted boys The Bees came from a goal and shocked Baroka FC 2-1 to get their debut in the second tier off to a flying start at the Kanyamazane Stadium.

Defender Bonginkosi Makume made the opening inside the half-hour mark when he headed in the far post following a corner-kick by Kabelo Kgositsile.

The lead was cancelled when Khayaelihle Xaba finished off a passing move and Sicelo Masilela bundled in a cross from the heart of the six-yard box.

Bees saw coach Humphrey Mlwane dismissed late in the match for somewhat dissent with the match officiating team, but they still went on to record an opening day win.
