Leopards warned over purchasing All Stars status

The South African Football Players Union has warned prospective buyers about the consequences that comes with the acquisition of All Stars' status.

Black Leopards were relegated to the ABC Motsepe League, and now aim to remain in the Motsepe Foundation Championship by buying the status of the financially struggling All Stars.

The players' union has warned that any new owner would be obligated to honour all the players' contracts and inherit the club's outstanding debt.

"All Stars, it seems there are problems also with salaries," Safpu secretary Nhlanhla Shabalala tells KickOff.

"If the team has been sold, it means whoever the buyer is, he or she is going to inherit the debt.

"So, it means when we chase that money, we are going to go for the new buyer.

"If you are going to buy a team, you must do proper due diligence because sometimes the buyers think they are only going to take the status and some of the players.

"It has happened even now in the Free State Stars and Casric matter, Casric are claiming they didn't know these players are on their books.

"Casric are liable to pay, so it's Casric that we are taking to court.

"So, the new buyer must make sure that All Stars' owners settle all the clubs' current debts before the status exchanges hands.

"It means for those All Stars players whose contracts expire now in June, it means they will probably have two months' outstanding salaries that have not been paid.

"We must understand that these players are human beings, they are household people, they are providers, and what we do to them reflects their families. We bring suffering to a lot of people."
