GladAfrica NFD winners decided in PSL boardroom due to Polokwane Sekhukhune matter?

Polokwane City were found guilty of failing to include five under-23 players on their teamsheet in the GladAfrica Championship match against Sekhukhune United on 2 January 2021.

On the day the former Premiership side had four under-23 players instead of the required five.

Therefore the PSL Disciplinary Committee found them guilty and also ordered the deduction of three points from Rise and Shine's total.

Despite Polokwane winning that match unfairly, the three points were not awarded to their opponents Sekhukhune.

In almost a similar incident, Cape Town Spurs were awarded three points by the PSL DC after their hosts Cape United were found guilty of failing to honour their league fixture that was scheduled for 3 January 2021 at Parow Park.

Asked why Sekhukhune were not awarded the three points that were taken from Polokwane City, PSL prosecutor Nande Becker could not provide a full explanation.

"Thee facts were different," Becker tells snl24.com/kickoff.

According to an insider in the PSL offices who wanted to remain anonymous, the reason the punishment was not the same is because the Spurs game was not played while the Sekhukhune one took place and there was a result.

"Normally you don't get points, but in a situation like Cape United's they said they couldn't come to the game because they didn't have the players and they didn't make the necessary arrangements," says the source.

"It depends on the DC. The DC can award points to a team, they can just fine them, deduct points... it has that right in terms of the constitution."

Sekhukhune United and PSL legal advisor Michael Murphy could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, the PSL Executive Committee will meet on Thursday to discuss the arbitration outcome on the Polokwane City vs Sekhukhune United matter.
