Gabriel Nyoni career threatened after surgery on broken leg

Nyoni suffered a career-threatening foot injury in Cape Umoya United's goalless draw with Richards Bay a few weeks ago and had to undergo surgery.

Despite a successful operation, the former Maritzburg United, CAPS United and Highlanders right-winger says his future now lies in the hands of his doctors.

"The pain has significantly gone down. I will get into my second surgery soon to remove the screws and wires," Nyoni tells snl24.com/kickoff.

Asked if that meant he will be playing football again, the Zimbabwean replies: "No, that is just procedure for a Lisfranc foot injury. [Expecting to be out for] one year to one year and a half.

"After six months they will assess if I will be able to continue with football or not."

Nyoni describes the innocuous incident that led to his unfortunate injury after he went up for a 50/50 challenge with a Richards Bay defender, who then landed on his foot.

"I don't know his name, but he crushed all the ligaments and the foot shifted. The ball was in the air, I tried to control it on my chest, he pushed me while in the air, I fell down, then him when he was also coming down then crushed my ankle completely.

"Doctors are saying it might be the end of my career, because they put screws in the foot."
